Positive Pay: Protecting Your Business from Check and ACH Fraud

Positive Pay is an advanced fraud detection tool designed to help businesses monitor and control check and ACH activity on their accounts. By improving communication between you and Community Trust Bank, Positive Pay is an additional layer of security developed to combat the increasing risk of check and ACH fraud.


How Positive Pay Helps Your Business:

  • Flags suspicious or unauthorized checks before they clear
  • Gives you the ability to review and decide whether to pay or return items
  • Reduces the risk of financial loss for your business.

Levels of Protection

We offer several Positive Pay options to meet your business’s security needs:

Positive Pay (Standard Protection)

  • Automatically included when you enroll in Business Internet Banking

  • You are not required to upload check issue files

  • You review and decision each check that attempts to clear your account


Payee Positive Pay (Enhanced Protection)

  • Enrollment required

  • You upload a file each day checks are issued, that includes:

    • Check Date

    • Check Amount

    • Payee Name

    • Check Number

  • This option offers enhanced fraud protection by matching all check details, including payee information

  • Fewer items need manual review due to the accuracy of the uploaded check data


ACH Positive Pay

  • Designed to detect unauthorized or suspicious pre-authorized electronic debits

  • Requires completion of a Debit Block Form and signed agreement


Decision Deadlines & Notifications

To ensure timely decisions and avoid unintended payments or returns:

For Check Positive Pay:

  • Items must be decisioned by 10:00 AM ET

  • If no action is taken, the check is automatically paid

  • Access decisions via the Business Online Banking Portal or Business Banking Mobile App

  • Set up email or text alerts to be notified when decisions are needed


For ACH Positive Pay:

  • Items must be decisioned by 3:00 PM ET

  • If no action is taken, the debit is returned to the originating vendor

  • Alerts via email or text can also be configured for ACH items
